WTAE-TV: Allegheny General Hospital nurses volunteer to go to Haiti

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Some nurses from Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh are headed to the disaster zone in Haiti to help care for earthquake survivors.

When the Service Employees International Union, which represents the nurses, asked for volunteers, Cece Peterson, of Cranberry, signed up without hesitation. The LifeFlight registered nurse said she wasn't able to help out in crisis situations in the past, so this decision was a no-brainer.

"I've always regretted not being able to raise my hand at that point. So, when Haiti came up, I saw no reason to say no," Peterson said.

On Wednesday, Peterson and her coworker John Zeigler, who is a registered nurse at AGH's surgical intensive care unit, left Pittsburgh International Airport for Chicago, from which they will depart to Haiti. Zeigler is the president of the registered nurses’ chapter of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania.

"I wish I was there yesterday. Every minute that I'm on the ground in Pittsburgh and not in transit is killing me. John is standing here nodding his head in agreement," Peterson said.

“When the call for volunteers went out, Allegheny General Hospital nurses were quick to respond," Ziegler said in a statement. "We’ve had almost two dozen nurses volunteer to go to Haiti and many more donate to relief organizations.”

Jessica Limpert, who is also a nurse at AGH, will join the pair on Monday. She has already made a checklist of things she needs to get done, and she plans to pack lightly and stock up on First Aid supplies and a few hospital scrubs.
