Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: 70 Pittsburgh-area doctors on way to Haiti

Monday, January 25th, 2010

By Adam Brandolph

Dr. James "Jeb" Blaugrund spent Saturday inside a hangar at Pittsburgh International Airport poring over hundreds of pallets of crutches, walkers and wheelchairs, anesthesia and other medical supplies.

"There are more antibiotics than I've ever seen in my life," said Blaugrund, a head and neck surgeon from Sewickley.

Today, he and about 70 other physicians are scheduled to arrive in Haiti to unload the roughly 30,000 pounds of medical equipment for hundreds of thousands of Haitians injured in the Jan. 12 earthquake that devastated the country. The flight is scheduled to take off about noon. From a portable X-ray machine and an anesthesia unit to suture and plaster for casts, the equipment will be used at makeshift hospitals near Port-au-Prince, the nation's capital, and at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles, about 40 miles north. The delivery will include food, water and diapers.

"People have come through in ways that exceed every expectation. It's remarkable," Blaugrund said. "Without the supplies, they can't take care of the patients."
