In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Pittsburgh Business Times: Allegheny General Hospital liver transplant program gets key certification

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

By Kris B. Mamula, Pittsburgh Business Times

Allegheny General Hospital’s liver transplant program has been certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, which promises to greatly increase the number of transplants performed at the hospital, officials said on Wednesday.

The certification means that Medicare and Medicaid patients and also patients with commercial insurance that requires CMS certification, will be able to have liver transplants done at Allegheny General, hospital officials said. Previously, these patients would have to be referred to other transplant centers.

“CMS certification for liver transplantation is an important milestone for our transplant program, for AGH and most importantly, for the people of western Pennsylvania,” Dr. Ngoc Thai, director of the hospital’s center for abdominal transplantation and liver disease, said in a prepared statement. “This certification will greatly expand our ability to serve patients in the greater community.”

The first liver transplant was performed at AGH in 2007. The hospital had transplanted hearts, kidneys and pancreases for two decades, but only received approval in 2005 from the United Network for Organ Sharing.
