Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

WPXI-TV: Tandem Heart -- A Life Saving Device

Monday, January 28th, 2013

Thousands of people around the country with advanced heart disease owe their lives to an innovative device called the Tandem Heart. Pioneered by CardiacAssist Inc., a Pittsburgh company that spun out of the cardiovascular disease research program at Allegheny General Hospital, the technology is a small blood pump that takes over the workload of the heart following therapies such as bypass surgery and balloon angioplasty, allowing the heart to rest and heal. George Magovern, MD, Chair, of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at AGH and the West Penn Allegheny Health System, and a board member of CardiacAssist, joins CardiacAssist CEO, John Marous on WPXI-TV's "Our Region's Business" program to talk about the technology and its growing acceptance as a pivotal technology that can improve patient outcomes.
