Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Associated Press: Medicare OKs Pittsburgh liver transplant program

Friday, January 29th, 2010

The liver transplant program at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh has been certified by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

The designation means patients covered by the government-run insurance programs can get liver transplants at the hospital. Patients of private insurance companies that use the federal designation can also have the surgery there.

Doctors performed the first liver transplants at Allegheny General in the fall of 2007, and have done 24 so far. Before that, only the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center offered liver transplants in the city.

Allegheny General was already certified for heart, kidney and pancreas transplants.
