Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

The Sewickley Herald: Surgeon gives Quaker Valley students glimpse inside challenging career

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Blood was pouring out of the young man's chest.

This was the third time Dr. Robert Moraca and his staff operated on his heart, which had been affected by intravenous drug use.

"The valves were almost not reconstructable. They were falling apart. The infection was eating through the heart, but he got through it. Sometimes they don't, and then, you have to go tell the parent," he said.

During a presentation earlier this month to Quaker Valley High School students interested in medical careers, Moraca, 40, of Sewickley, told that story after a student inquired about his scariest moment as a heart surgeon at Allegheny General Hospital.

Read all about it in the Sewickley Herald.
