Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

WTAE-TV: Eyelid surgery helps aneurysm patients

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Brain aneurysm patients are being treated through their eyelids with an innovative surgical technique that's being used at Allegheny General Hospital, WTAE Channel 4's Sally Wiggin reported.

Surgeons can make an incision in the crease of the eyelid and stabilize the weakened part of the blood vessel.

It has been a relief for Upper St. Clair police Officer Patrick Keally, whose aneurysm caused a mini-stroke in May.

"I was working in the yard, lost my vision for several minutes. It was frightening," Keally said.

Now, he's four months post-eyelid surgery.

"It's mild, whatever pain I've had," he said.

"Your vision is OK?" neurosurgeon Dr. Khaled Aziz asked.

"Very good. It's like brand new," he said.

First, neuro-ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Erik Happ made the incision.
