Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Reuters: Scient'x Announces Strategic Alliance in Dynamic Fusion with Allegheny General Hospital

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

GUYANCOURT, France & PITTSBURGH--(Business Wire)--
Scient`x Group S.A.S. (Scient`x), the worldwide leader in providing dynamic
solutions for both fusion and non-fusion* procedures for the spine, today
announced a strategic alliance with Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) in
Pittsburgh, PA that will include collaborative biomechanical and clinical
research, technology development and medical education.

AGH is a nationally-recognized academic medical center that serves as the
flagship hospital of the West Penn Allegheny Health System and a campus of the
Drexel University School of Medicine. The hospital is designated as both a
Neurosciences Center of Excellence and a Spine Center of Excellence, based on a
recent independent study of neurosurgical capabilities and patient care quality
at medical centers around the country. AGH is home to one of the nation`s
largest and most comprehensive neurosurgical programs and has a longstanding
history of pioneering research in the neurosciences field.

Scient`x recently launched its new strategy focusing on dynamic fusion,
including the introduction of its Isobar EvolutionTM Dynamic Rod, which is
indicated as an adjunct to fusion for the lumbar spine.

Oliver Burckhardt, President and CEO of Scient`x, said: "Partnering with an
institution like AGH will expedite the study and global acceptance of such
innovative technologies.

"Scient`x is honored and privileged to collaborate with a preeminent medical
center in the United States as we embark upon the next phase of our research and
development. This alliance with AGH not only greatly enhances our R&D
capabilities, but it brings a vital academic influence to our new dynamic
strategy. We are excited to have such an exceptional group of surgeons and
researchers join our efforts to forge an outcomes-based path in this emerging
dynamic fusion sector," Mr. Burckhardt added.

Jack Wilberger, MD, Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at both AGH and
Drexel University College of Medicine, commented: "Advancing the
state-of-the-art and exploring new frontiers in the treatment of neurological
disease has been a hallmark of our program for the past half century. We are
extremely proud of these accomplishments because the work has truly helped
improve the lives of many people. This new affiliation with Scient`x further
strengthens our ability to continue that tradition."

According to Donald Whiting, MD, Vice-Chair of Research in AGH`s Department of
Neurosurgery and Clinical Co-Director of the hospital`s Neurosurgery, Spine &
Biomechanics Research Laboratory, the recent opening of AGH`s Neurosciences
Institute and expansion of its research capabilities "has helped open the door
to collaborations with biomedical industry leaders like Scient`x."

The Neurosurgery Spine and Biomechanics Research Laboratory is located within
the Allegheny Singer Research Institute (ASRI), the research arm of AGH.

"Our affiliation with Scient`x is exciting on many levels. As the principal
investigation site of an impending clinical trial exploring the efficacy of
dynamic lumbar fusion, we at AGH are taking the lead on an important study that
will better define the concept and science of dynamic fusion as it is applied
now in the lumbar spine," Dr. Whiting added.

Boyle Cheng, PhD, Director of AGH`s Neurosurgery, Spine & Biomechanics Research
Laboratory and a nationally-recognized expert in degenerative spine disease,
said: "The hospital is well-positioned to lead innovative, translational
research projects such as those sponsored by Scient`x.
