New Hospitalist Program at Canonsburg General Hospital

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Canonsburg Hospital offers a Hospitalist Program for hospitalized inpatients. Two internal medicine physician practices, Waterdam Medical Associates physicians Jeffrey Gretz, DO and Jennifer Lewis, MD and Allegheny Medical Practice Network physicians Thomas B. Corkery, DO, Edward G. Dainesi, MD, Michael J. Heise, M.D. and Vincent J. Trapanotto, DO have partnered to develop the program for Canonsburg Hospital (CGH).

These board-certified internal medicine physicians are available in house or on call at the hospital seven days a week, 24 hours a day to provide admitted patients ongoing and immediate care.

“Many patients are being treated by this new kind of doctor – a doctor who may not be their family doctor, but who is responsible for their medical care during a hospital stay,” said Kim Malinky, President and Chief Executive Officer of the hospital. Hospitalists work as partners with your physician to provide patients with the highest standard of care during a hospital stay. They then provide a seamless transition from the hospital to returning to your primary care physician.”

Dr. Corkery, Chief Medical Officer at Canonsburg Hospital noted that the advantages of this new hospitalist program include increased efficiency and – most important – the benefit of receiving quality care from highly trained and experienced physicians on a continual basis during a patient’s hospitalization. Dr. Corkery also noted that the hospitalist program provides assurance to both physicians and their patients that ongoing and immediate care is provided to patients during a hospital stay.

Dr. Corkery noted that when a patient’s physician believes he/she needs to be hospitalized, he or she will coordinate their admission with the hospitalist physician. Once admitted, the hospitalist group will be in charge of the patient’s care and see the patient daily. The hospitalist will be in contact with the patient’s physician, working together to ensure the patient receives the best care possible.

In summary, the Hospitalist Canonsburg Hospital will:

• Assess and treat your medical condition
• Coordinate your hospital care
• Review your progress with your physician
• Establish a relationship with you and your family

When discharged, the Hospitalist will transition the patient’s medical care back to their primary physician, who will resume the responsibility for ongoing outpatient treatment.
