Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: People with flu-like symptoms flood emergency rooms

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Flu season is here, but hospitals say people are filling emergency rooms because of concerns about the H1N1 flu.

Doctors say if you have basic symptoms of the flu, the best way to get over it is to rest at home, drink plenty of fluids and use over-the-counter pain medication.

"If you are feeling sicker, you're short of breath, you're weak, you're not feeling well at all then you need to come and you need to call your doctor or come to the emergency department," Dr. Bruce MacLeod, at UPMC Mercy Hospital, said.

But those are only the most severe cases.

Lately, emergency rooms are dealing with an influx of people, driven by fear of the H1N1 flu.

"I think we have to continue to emphasize that so far this has not been the major disease that is going to kill everyone instantaneously in this country," Dr. Bruce Dixon, director of the Allegheny County Health Department, said.
