Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

When Laura Conti noticed homeless men walking around in the freezing cold with holes in their shoes, she knew she needed to help them.

So five years ago, when she was a freshman at North Allegheny High School, Conti, her brother Matt and father, Dr. Stephen Conti, an orthopedic surgeon at Allegheny General Hospital, started the "Our Hearts To Your Soles" program, which gives homeless men new shoes.

"I noticed that there were lots of organizations that gave clothes, but none that gave shoes," said Conti, 18, of Franklin Park. "I just wanted to change that."

The program is now offered in more than 40 cities nationwide and collectively gave away more than 6,000 pairs of shoes to homeless shelters last year.

In recognition of her generosity and community leadership, Seventeen magazine recently awarded Conti with a $1,000 Mission Award scholarship.

"I am glad that I can do something that other people think is worthy enough to recognize," Conti, a freshman at the University of Notre Dame, said.
