Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Canonsburg General Hospital Offers Breast MRI

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Canonsburg Hospital recommends mammograms being part of every woman’s preventative healthcare. However, neither mammograms nor a physical exam can tell if a breast lump is malignant and for this reason Canonsburg Hospital now offers breast MRI

A breast MRI works in conjunction with the digital mammogram. While mammograms use x-rays to capture pictures of the breast, a breast MRI takes cross sectional images without any exposure to radiation. This exam is an additional imaging technique that some women may require. “The procedure is recommended for patients that have a high-risk of developing breast cancer,” Marilyn Kovach, director of medical imaging at Canonsburg Hospital stated. “The breast MRI is the procedure of choice for high risk patients to show cancerous tumors before they would be visible in mammography or ultrasound.”
A physician may also recommend a breast MRI:
- To evaluate the extent of cancer after a new diagnosis
- To evaluate abnormalities on a digital mammogram
- For a woman with dense breast tissue or to assess breast implants
- Following chemotherapy treatment
- Evaluating lumpectomy sites as follow up treatment

“Canonsburg Hospital’s Imaging Department offers women the latest in imaging and examinations and we are dedicated to providing women with the best care and services,” Kovach said.
