Clarion Hospital Partners with Allegheny Health Network for Radiation Oncology Services

Monday, November 18th, 2013

Clarion, PA (November 18, 2013) – Officials of Clarion Hospital and Allegheny Health Network announced today a partnership that will bring radiation oncology services back to the hospital’s Cancer Center.
Expected to re-open by May 2014, the new radiation oncology department at Clarion Hospital will provide cancer patients with state-of-the-art radiation treatment capabilities under the direction of Allegheny Health Network’s nationally recognized team of physicians and radiation physicists.
“We are excited to partner with such an outstanding hospital to provide the people of Clarion County and the surrounding region with advanced cancer care,” said David Parda, MD, Chairman of the Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute and Radiation Oncology Network. “Clarion’s patients and their  physicians can be confident that they will have access to one of the nation’s foremost radiation oncology programs and industry-leading technology that enables us to treat their cancer in the most effective and efficient manner possible.
The restoration of radiation oncology services will make The Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital a full, comprehensive center again. The Center, which recently marked its ten-year anniversary, has helped more than 2,000 people in the fight against cancer.
The Clarion Hospital Foundation has worked diligently to raise funds necessary for a digital accelerator for the radiation oncology program and to date has raised nearly $2 million. The new facility will use the Elekta Infinity digital accelerator, a fully integrated radiation treatment system that allows clinicians to personalize imaging for each patient and deliver precise, fast treatments.
“This is such a victory for our community,” said Tracy Myers, Manager of The Cancer Center at Clarion Hospital.   “For the past two years, people have had to travel to DuBois, Kittanning, Seneca, and as far as Pittsburgh for radiation treatments. Now, once again, patients can get their full scope of treatment in one location in their own backyard.”
Clarion will be the ninth facility in Allegheny Health Network’s Radiation Oncology Network, with the lead facility based at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH).
Allegheny Health Network’s Radiation Oncology Network is accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), a distinguished seal of approval that identifies programs offering cancer patients the highest level of quality care and safety. The designation puts Allegheny Health Radiation Oncology among the largest accredited radiation oncology programs in the United States and the first accredited program in western Pennsylvania.
The Allegheny Health Radiation Oncology Network is staffed by an expert and experienced team of 14 oncologists, 11 radiation physicists and 90 support staff. Led by Dr. Parda, the program is a leading provider of advanced radiation techniques, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS), Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) and Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART), as well as functional and 4D data incorporation into radiation treatment planning, oncology information systems/electronic medical records, evidence-based multidisciplinary individualized patient care, clinical trials and quality assurance/patient safety/peer review.
