December Classes Offered at Destination Wellness

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The following classes are available to the public at Destination Wellness located at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills:

December 2010

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning. This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues. Sessions are by appointment only. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call 724-274-5202 today for appointment/details.

Highmark® Clear the Air: Smoking Cessation
Your health is worth one more try. This one-session, two-hour program is the step you take BEFORE deciding to quit tobacco. This program helps you to identify your reasons for quitting and gives you the tools you need to quit for good. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call for your one-on-one session with a trained smoking cessation instructor at 724-274-5202.

Birth Basics
6:30-9 p.m.
This two and one half hour session provides women and their partners with updated, accurate information about what to expect when an epidural is given. Attendees will learn what to expect during the labor and birth process and discover answers to many important questions, including how to tell true labor from false labor, when to come to the hospital, what an epidural is and what happens if it does not work. This class should be taken in the second trimester of pregnancy. Class fee is $30 per couple. For registration, payment and questions please call 412-578-7271. Class size is limited.

Thursdays: December 2 & 9
Joslin Diabetes Center’s Self Management Education two-day evening series
5 - 8 p.m.
This comprehensive program is designed for individuals with diabetes who are interested in learning how to manage their diabetes, prevent complications, eat healthfully and control blood sugar levels. There are two classes in this series that occur once for two consecutive weeks. *Participants must attend both classes. Check with your insurance carrier to determine your coverage for diabetes educational services. Call for registration, fees and details at 724-367-2400.

Saturday, December 4
Heartsaver AED/CPR
9 a.m.-1 p.m.
This course includes adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Relief of choking in the adult, child and infant victim also included. A course completion card valid for two years will be given after skills and written testing. Fee: $35 (student manual included). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited.

Blood Drive
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Donate blood and save a life. With every four blood donations, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local business.

Infant CPR and Safety
6 – 9 p.m.
This three-hour class is recommended for all parents and caretakers. Emergency care of a choking infant or child, infant/child CPR techniques and infant/child safety are covered. CPR techniques are demonstrated and practiced. Car seat safety is also reviewed. Class fee is $30 per person. To register call 412-578-7271. Class size is limited.

Friday, December 10
Family & Friends CPR
5 – 7:30 p.m.
Family & Friends CPR was developed by the American Heart Association to teach the basics of CPR to people with limited or no medical training. Family & Friends CPR does not provide certification card; however, it does provide you with all the steps necessary to save a loved one should the need ever arise. Fee: $10 per student (price includes student book that has a reference card to tear out and keep in your wallet). Call to register at 724-274-5202.

Saturday, December 11
BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class in the last two years, you can take the renewal course. You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers the information in the healthcare provider class in an abbreviated format. Upon course completion, participants receive a card valid for two years. Fee: $30/student (includes required student manual). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited.

1 - 6 p.m.
The first aid course includes basic first aid, adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Monday, December 13
BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR
5 - 10 p.m.
If you are a healthcare provider this is the class for you! It includes adult, child and infant CPR. Two-rescuer scenarios with bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). Certification card - valid for two years, will be provided to participants after completion of skills and written testing. Fee: $50 (required student manual included). Highmark® Suspending Stress lunch & learn
12 p.m.
Stress is difficult to avoid. Whether its work, family life, last minute parties, presents or baking, stress touches each of us on a daily basis, especially during the holidays. Join us for a wellness workshop and learn how to take care of your emotional health with Suspending Stress. Examine how stress impacts your life at work and home and discover easy-to-use tools to help de-stress and bring balance to your day. Bring your lunch and learn while you munch!
