KDKA-TV: Doctor: Concussion effects can be life-changing

Friday, November 27th, 2009

A Kansas City Chiefs player's knee connected with the back of Ben Roethlisberger's head in overtime and knocked him out of the game Sunday.

Like many Steelers fans, Dr. Jack Wilberger, chief of neurosurgery at Allegheny General Hospital, was watching the game.

"You couldn't tell it in regular time, but when they slowed it down, that knee really pushed his head very violently from the right side to the left side," Dr. Wilberger said.

Roethlisberger was able to walk off the field, but appeared to be dazed on the sidelines.

The severity of concussions can range from minor to life-changing.

"The most important thing in coming back from head trauma or concussion danger is not returning to play too soon," Dr. Wilberger said.
