WTAE-TV: New Implantable Hearing Aid Has FDA Approval

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Marlene Hunter struggled all of her life after getting mumps at age 5 and losing her hearing.

She told Channel 4 Action News that her classmates teased her because she wore a device "like a humongous transistor radio, and it had a huge wire, and an ear portion was very large also."

Now, she says a completely implantable hearing device called the Esteem has changed her life, and no one can see her disability.

"Nobody has to know, except their physician," said Dr. Douglas Chen, of Allegheny General Hospital.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Esteem last year, and it's going on the market now.

See the report on WTAE-TV.
