November Classes Offered at Destination Wellness

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The following classes are available to the public at Destination Wellness located at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills:

November 2010

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning. This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues. Sessions are by appointment only. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call 724-274-5202 today for appointment/details.

Highmark® Clear the Air: Smoking Cessation
Your health is worth one more try. This one-session, two-hour program is the step you take BEFORE deciding to quit tobacco. This program helps you to identify your reasons for quitting and gives you the tools you need to quit for good. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call for your one-on-one session with a trained smoking cessation instructor at 724-274-5202.

Tuesdays: November 2 & 9
Joslin Diabetes Center’s Self Management Education two-day evening series
5 - 8 p.m.
This comprehensive program is designed for individuals with diabetes who are interested in learning how to manage their diabetes, prevent complications, eat healthfully and control blood sugar levels. There are two classes in this series that occur once for two consecutive weeks. *Participants must attend both classes. Check with your insurance carrier to determine your coverage for diabetes educational services. Call for registration, fees and details at 724-367-2400.

Children’s Coloring Contest Kick-Off
To promote “National Hand Washing Awareness Week”, December 5-11, 2010, Alle-Kiski Medical Center’s Destination Wellness is hosting a coloring contest for children ages 3-10. Hand washing is the simplest, most effective thing people can do to reduce the spread of infectious diseases. Pick up your official entry coloring page at Destination Wellness and enter your colored picture by 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2010. Pictures will be judged and winner will be announced on Friday, December 3. One lucky child will win an age appropriate prize! *All entered pictures will be displayed at Destination Wellness. Spread the word on hand washing, not germs!

BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
5 - 8 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class in the last two years, you can take the renewal course. You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers the information in the healthcare provider class in an abbreviated format. Upon course completion, participants receive a card valid for two years. Fee: $30/student (includes required student manual). Call to register at

Saturday, November 6
Blood Drive
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Donate blood and save a life. With every four blood donations, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local business.

Meet the Doctor at Destination Wellness
11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Come and meet Nithya Guhanand, MD, from Allegheny Valley Internal Medicine in Natrona Heights, Pa. Bring your questions or just get to know Dr. Guhanand, one of the newest members of their team of physicians. She is a recent graduate of the West Penn Allegheny Health System’s Family Practice Residency Program.

Discovering Holiday Herbs
6 p.m.
Herbs are flavoring agents used for enriching or altering the flavor or odor of foods. Many herbs have different uses. Join registered dietitian, Amy Helke from Alle-Kiski Medical Center’s Food & Nutrition Services as she presents how to prepare healthier holiday meals by using fresh herbs to make foods more flavorful. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class
6 - 9 p.m.
This class is recommended for expectant parents who have decided to breastfeed or who are considering breastfeeding as their feeding choice. A board-certified lactation consultant will answer your questions and provide you with useful information about breastfeeding. Topics include the benefits of breast milk, establishing a milk supply, positioning the baby, proper latch-on, preventing problems and returning to work. Expectant fathers are welcome. Heartsaver AED/CPR
9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
This course includes adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Relief of choking in the adult, child and infant victim also included. A course completion card valid for two years will be given after skills and written testing. Fee: $35 (student manual included). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited.

BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR
2 - 7 p.m.
If you are a healthcare provider this is the class for you! It includes adult, child and infant CPR. Two-rescuer scenarios with bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). Certification card - valid for two years, will be provided to participants after completion of skills and written testing. Fee: $50 (required student manual included). Monday, November 15
Heartsaver First Aid with AED/CPR
5 - 10 p.m.
The first aid course includes basic first aid, adult, child, and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Diabetic Eye Disease
2:30 p.m.
Diabetic eye disease refers to a group of eye problems that people may face as a complication from their diabetes. Michael Sigal, MD, a board certified ophthalmologist with Allegheny Ophthalmology Associates, will discuss the role that diabetes plays on your eyes, and how to maintain your eye health.
