STAR Center Invites Community to Learn More About Holiday Safety, Medical Simulation, at Dec. 18 Open House

PITTSBURGH – STAR, the Simulation, Teaching and Academic Research Center at West Penn Allegheny Health System, invites the community to learn more about how to keep themselves and their loved ones safe during the holiday season, at an Open House, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 18.

Those attending can also learn more about the fascinating capabilities of medical simulation and the STAR Center’s involvement with the community.

Activities will include:

- Tours of the STAR Center, located at the West Penn Hospital School of Nursing, 4900 Friendship Ave. in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood.
- Tips on holiday burn safety from Sandy Smith, Outreach Coordinator, West Penn Burn Center
- Demonstrations of how to operate an AED (automated external defibrillator) and perform the Heimlich maneuver by Community College of Allegheny County EMS Coordinator Tony Cuda.
- Learn about the partnership between Pittsburgh Peabody High School and WPAHS to train the healthcare leaders of tomorrow.
- Ask questions about the paramedic training program offered by CCAC in conjunction with the STAR Center.

The Simulation, Teaching, and Academic Research Center at West Penn Allegheny Health System is dedicated to achieving excellence in patient care through the pursuit of lifelong learning, research and innovation. Using state-of-the-art mannequins that mimic the symptoms of a wide range of health conditions, the STAR Center provides hands-on learning opportunities to allow aspiring and practicing health professionals to perfect their skills in situations closely resembling the clinical environment.
