Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Another Plane From Pittsburgh Going To Haiti

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Last Sunday night, a team of doctors, nurses and aide workers landed in Port-au-Prince from Pittsburgh, bringing $15 million in sorely-needed medical supplies.

It was a project spearheaded by Highmark and Sewickley businessman Jim Bouchard.

"The doctors needed stuff now. They needed it airlifted it and we just need to take it upon ourselves to make that happen," he said.

Returning doctors say the surgical supplies and the pain-killing narcotics proved to be a godsend, giving them the tools to perform the surgeries and the drugs to perform amputations and other procedures without inflicting further pain.

"Within 24 hours these were directly saving lives and helping children all due to the great generosity of people in Pittsburgh that donated them," Mark Sangimino, of Allegheny General Hospital, said. "Very proud to be from Pittsburgh."
