WTAE-TV: Local Missionaries Making Difference In Haiti

Monday, February 1st, 2010

PITTSBURGH -- A group of area doctors and volunteers returned home to Pittsburgh on Sunday morning after a two-week-long relief mission in Haiti.

When disaster struck Haiti, donations for the Brother’s Brother Foundation started pouring in from all over western Pennsylvania.

The foundation collected everything from toiletries to medical supplies, filled up a plane, and headed to grief-stricken Haiti.

Dr. Chip Lambert, who works with the Medical Benevolence Foundation and is the medical director for Brother’s Brother, told Channel 4 Action News that they did a lot of work down in Haiti. He said they set up a make-shift hospital and treated many earthquake victims.

“We're still in the acute recovery stage. I'm certain over the next few days we'll be able to pull some people alive from the rubble. So, the recovery stage is still full speed ahead at this time,” Lambert said.

The local doctors and volunteers didn’t just return home on Saturday with inspiring stories to tell, but aboard the plane was a Haitian teenager in desperate need of medical care.

"When I first got there we had little capacity, we had to create clinics, we had to create operating rooms, we started with nothing and by the time I left we had three working operating rooms," Lambert said.

Dr. James Blaugrund, of Allegheny General Hospital, said the teenager has a large tumor in his leg that could be deadly if not treated right away.
