AVH Receives Patient Navigator Grant
Wednesday, February 13th, 2013
Allegheny Valley Hospital (AVH) was recently approved to receive a grant from the Highmark Foundation to support a new patient navigator pilot program designed to reduce disparities and improve access to quality healthcare services especially among low-income and uninsured populations.
As a participant in the pilot project, AVH will use the grant money to help fund the cost of hiring two patient navigators for the first year of the program. At the end of the pilot year AVH will plan on assuming the cost of the patient navigators moving forward.
Patient navigators are non-clinical healthcare professionals who help patients and families navigate through the maze of healthcare information and insurance issues when dealing with a serious illness. They help to coordinate medical care, ensure administrative and insurance matters are properly managed and gather information related to a patient’s illness. Their goal is to help get patients and families on the road to recovery by coordinating their care and by minimizing much of the stress and anxiety related to dealing with a medical condition.
