WTAE-TV: More Pittsburgh Nurses Head To Haiti

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

PITTSBURGH -- More aid is on the way to earthquake-ravaged Haiti in the form of nurses from Allegheny General Hospital.

Six nurses from AGH left from Pittsburgh International Airport on Wednesday morning to help with relief efforts in Haiti.

The nurses are the latest group from the hospital to go help out in the island nation, following last month's earthquake.

In January, other nurses from the hospital flew to Haiti to help with relief efforts.

The Haitian governor said the earthquake left as many as 230,000 people dead, another 300,000 injured and an estimated 1 million people homeless.

The nurses are expected to spend five days in Haiti and plan to help with the medical needs of as many people as they can reach. The nurses are using personal time and vacation days to make the trip.

"I'm not sure what to expect when I get down there. I've heard stories but getting a little bit better. They're able to mobilize better and get us out into the community, so, hopefully we'll be able to help a lot more people, not just the ones that can get to us," said Ashlee Buterbaugh, one of the nurses heading to Haiti.

The nurses are scheduled to return to Pittsburgh on Feb. 23. The nurses told Channel 4 Action News they hope to send a group of nurses to Haiti every week for the rest of the year to help in any way they can.
