Destination Wellness Offers March Classes

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The following classes are available to the public at Destination Wellness located at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills:

March 2011

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning. This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues. Sessions are by appointment only. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call 724-274-5202 today for appointment/details.

Highmark® Clear the Air: Smoking Cessation
Your health is worth one more try. This one-session, two-hour program is the step you take BEFORE deciding to quit tobacco. This program helps you to identify your reasons for quitting and gives you the tools you need to quit for good. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
5 - 8 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class in the last two years, you can take the renewal course. You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers the information in the healthcare provider class in an abbreviated format. Upon course completion, participants receive a card valid for two years. Fee: $30/student (includes required student manual). Call to register at

Tai Chi for beginners series begins
7 p.m.
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that promotes well being by circulating the “chi” of the body through a series of slow, relaxing and controlled movements. It’s great for reducing stress and anxiety, improving balance, increasing flexibility and much more. Tai Chi is recommended as a helpful program for people with arthritis or those recovering from an accident or fall. Classes runs for six weeks through April 6, 2011. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Donate blood and save a life. With every four blood donations, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local business.

Monday, March 7
Diabetes & Kidney Disease
6:30 p.m.
Your kidneys play an important role in keeping you healthy. If your kidneys do not work properly, waste products can build up in your blood and cause grave damage to your body. Join Uma Kannapadi, MD from Renal Endocrine Associates in Natrona Heights, Pa., as she provides an overview of the relationship between diabetes and kidney disease. Diabetes can damage the kidneys and cause them to fail, which may progress to diseased kidneys. Learn what you and your doctors can do to slow the progression. Call to register at 724-274-5202.

Color Your Palette with Flavor food demo
2 p.m.
Celebrate National Nutrition Month with the theme of “Eat Right with Color” by attending our food demonstration. This is a great way to reinforce the need to make better educated food selections by learning the foods and nutrients that are represented by the colors you may find on a painter’s palette. HOPESM Highmark Osteoporosis Prevention & Education series begins
9 a.m.
Develop stronger bones for a lifetime! This take-action lifestyle improvement program focuses on making healthy choices to improve bone health and prevent or manage osteoporosis. You’ll learn how to establish a comprehensive bone-building plan that includes nutrition, supplements, strength training exercises, stress management and much more. Family & Friends CPR
2 – 4:30 p.m.
Family & Friends CPR was developed by the American Heart Association to teach the basics of CPR to people with limited or no medical training. Family & Friends CPR does not provide a certification card; however, it does provide you with all the steps necessary to save a loved one should the need ever arise. Fee: $10/student (price includes student book that has a reference card to tear out and keep in your wallet). Call to register at 724-274-5202.

Heartsaver First Aid with AED/CPR
5 - 10 p.m.
The first aid course includes basic first aid, adult, child, and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. This course includes adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Relief of choking in the adult, child and infant victim also included. BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR
2 – 7 p.m.
If you are a healthcare provider this is the class for you! It includes adult, child and infant CPR. Two-rescuer scenarios with bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). Certification card - valid for two years, will be provided to participants after completion of skills and written testing. Fee: $50 (required student manual included). Monday, March 21
Babysitting for Grandparents
6 – 8 p.m.
Have you noticed that a lot has changed since you had your children? Come to this class designed especially for grandparents. Participants will learn emergency care of a choking infant and child. These techniques will be demonstrated and practiced. Safety, including stroller, car seat, toys, sleep and childproofing will be reviewed along with tips to prevent problem behavior. Fee: $5/person.
