AKMC Trust Partners with Borders for Books and Bunnies Drive

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Natrona Heights, Pa. – Alle-Kiski Medical Center (AKMC) Trust is pleased to announce that it will again be partnering with Borders at Pittsburgh Mills for the second annual spring “Books and Bunnies” drive.

From March 1 through April 30, customers at Borders will have the opportunity to purchase a new plush bunny rabbit or a children’s book to be donated to the Emergency Department at Allegheny Valley Hospital. The items are distributed to children who come to the Emergency Department to help ease their fears and distract them while they are treated.

“Coming to the Emergency Department can be an overwhelming experience for children who are sick or injured,” said Ginger Taylor, Chairwoman of the AKMC Trust Board of Trustees. “Having a toy to hold onto or a book that they can read helps to provide comfort to a child in that unfamiliar and even frightening situation.”
Terri Iwinski, General Manager at Borders, created and spearheaded the project. “We are excited to partner with the hospital Trust again on this very worthy project. Borders is strongly committed to meeting community needs and we are thrilled to help meet this need at the Allegheny Valley Hospital.”
This year’s Books and Bunnies drive will feature two special events, which are scheduled for Saturday, March 12 and Saturday, April 23. Both events will take place at Borders at Pittsburgh Mills from 12-2 p.m. and will provide the opportunity to look inside an ambulance and a children’s story time about going to the doctor.
“Books and Bunnies has been very well received by the staff and physicians in the Emergency Department, as well as by the pediatric patients and their parents,” said William B. McCready, Executive Director of the AKMC Trust. Last year, this program resulted in more than 50 stuffed animals and 350 children’s books being donated to the hospital and I expect this year’s program to be even more successful!”
