Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Pittsburghers Try To Stay Warm During Deep Freeze

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

The frigid temperatures have people bundling up across the area.

While many people can stay indoors, others can't and that has doctors offering reminders to people before they head outside.

Warm coats, scarves and gloves are a common sight today across the area.

Local resident Sangpin Mkgrjee made his way across the 6th Street Bridge this morning. He says he just moved to Pittsburgh.

"I came to Pittsburgh from Toronto, so I'm accustomed with cold, but… on the bridge, it's really, really windy," he said.

Meanwhile, Vincent Butschle was trying to stay warm while working construction at PNC Park. He said he would much rather be at home on his couch.

"When you work out with the mortar and stuff – it dries out your hands," said Butschle.

Doctors say if you do have to be outside, it's important to be careful of frostbite.

"The dangers are mostly for frostbite, and more severe can lead to hypothermia; but frostbite – mainly for… your fingers, your toes, your ears, your nose - which can be left out into the open air - the tissue can be damaged because of the cold temperature," said Dr. Thomas Campbell, of the West Penn Allegheny Health System.

He says it's also important to dress up in layers.
