New Castle News: Shenango man reflects on medical visit to Haiti

As an anesthetist at Pittsburgh’s Allegheny General Hospital, Thomas Squillo had pretty much seen it all.

But never so much of it.

The Shenango Township resident returned Sunday from a week in earthquake-ravaged Haiti with a team of Pittsburgh area medical professionals who flew to Port-au-Prince aboard a jet chartered by Sewickley businessman Jim Bouchard. The group wound up working in a tent city set up by the University of Miami Hospital at the edge of the airport.

“I have never, never done anything like that before,” Squillo said. “The trauma and the situation one-on-one were no different (from what he sees in Pittsburgh). It’s just the mass numbers. That’s what was haunting.

“The first night we walked into a tent, when we were just getting a tour of the place before we started working there, you heard babies crying, people moaning, people screaming and people praying — two hundred people, all at one time.”

Other tents housed operating rooms, an intensive care unit and a pediatric unit. The medical staff slept in tents only slightly roomier than a large doghouse while taking cold, outdoor showers and using portable restroom facilities.
