WTAE-TV: Outpatient Treatment Can Control Barrett's Esophagus

PITTSBURGH -- Barrett's esophagus is an irreversible change in the lining of that tube that connects the mouth and stomach. Chronic, long-term reflux is almost always the cause.

Channel 4 Action News anchor Sally Wiggin reported that there is a relatively new way to control it without having part of your esophagus removed.

"I field nearly daily phone calls from concerned physicians and patients who want to discuss their individual risk of developing cancer of the esophagus," said Dr. Abhijit Kulkarni, of the Allegheny Center for Digestive Health.

Herman Ross, of Greene County, is one of those patients. He lost a lung to cancer in 2005, and a subsequent diagnosis of Barrett's was frightening.

"Had one cancer over here and another over here, and I am really blessed because I am still here," said Ross.
