Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Four exemplary area dads have been named Pittsburgh’s 2011 Fathers of the Year. They will be honored at Pittsburgh’s 1st Annual Father of the Year Awards Dinner benefiting the American Diabetes Association.

These well-known Pittsburgh fathers were selected by the National Father’s Day Council, which honors fathers for their outstanding commitment to their children and the values of fatherhood. The program is being brought to the Pittsburgh area for the first time in 2011 and is sponsored locally by Novo Nordisk and KDKA-TV.

The honorees will be formally introduced at an invitation only Honoree Reception held at the Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh Hotel on Thursday, March 3rd at 6:00 p.m.

The 2011 honorees are:
? Michael Carr, Senior Associate, Jones, Gregg, Creehan & Gerace LLP
? Steven D. Irwin, Commissioner - Pennsylvania Securities Commissioner
Attorney - Leech, Tishman, Fuscaldo & Lampl LLC
? Peter J. Jannetta, MD, Professor and Vice Chairman - Department of Neurosurgery, Allegheny General Hospital
? Bob Pompeani, Sports Director/Anchor – KDKA-TV

The Father of the Year Awards Dinner will also be held at the Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh Hotel on Friday, June, 17th. The black tie optional affair is open to the public with tickets at $195 per plate.

“We’re so proud to be given the opportunity to honor these exceptional fathers and to bring this program to a city whose unparalleled work ethic and community spirit is only rivaled by that of its’ deep-rooted family values” says Amy Winters Thumpston, co-chair of the Pittsburgh Father’s Day Council and founder of Accents by Amy Interior Design.

The National Father's Day Council was established in 1931 and has partnered with the American Diabetes Association since 1999 to host the Father of the Year Awards. National Heritage Past Recipients have included President Gerald Ford, former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, American Bandstand’s Dick Clark, actor Andy Garcia, and National Football League great Terry Bradshaw. Together, more than $10 million has been raised to benefit the research, education and advocacy efforts of the American Diabetes Association.

“All of our dads understand the devastation that people with diabetes and their families, friends or colleagues face each day,” adds Steven Shivak, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association of Western Pennsylvania. “So they support the mission of the American Diabetes Association; to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.
