Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Local trials helped in FDA approval of Lupus drug

On March 9, the Food and Drug Administration approved use of belimumab, now called Benlysta, for patients with SLE who are receiving standard therapy. The FDA said the drug was the first specifically approved to treat lupus since 1955. Physicians from the Lupus Center of Excellence at West Penn Allegheny Health System were instrumental in the trials that brought this breakthrough medication to market.
