West Penn Allegheny Health System Radiation Oncology Network Earns Distinguished National Accreditation for Quality and Patient Safety

Monday, March 26th, 2012

WPAHS is Largest ACR-ASTRO Accredited Program in US, Only Recognized Program in Western PA

PITTSBURGH, Pa (March 26, 2012) — West Penn Allegheny Health System’s Radiation Oncology Network has once again earned accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and The American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), a distinguished seal of approval that identifies programs offering cancer patients the highest level of quality care and safety.

The designation makes West Penn Allegheny Radiation Oncology the largest accredited radiation oncology program in the United States and the only accredited program in western Pennsylvania.

The ACR-ASTRO accreditation is awarded only to facilities meeting specific practice guidelines and technical standards developed by ACR and ASTRO after a rigorous, peer-review evaluation by board certified radiation oncologists and expert medical physicists. Reviewers assess patient care and treatment, patient safety, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs.

“This accreditation is the result of a team effort by our outstanding physicians, physicists, nurses, therapists, dosimetrists, administrative leadership and ancillary staff,” said David S. Parda, MD, FACP, WPAHS System Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology, and Chair of the WPAHS Oncology Service Line. “All of us are united in a mission to provide the most individualized, compassionate and technologically superior level of cancer care possible.”

“Our procedures, standards of clinical and technical care and peer review are long established and continually improved across our network,” said Russell Fuhrer, MD, System Director of Clinical Operations, Department of Radiation Oncology.  “Integration and demonstrated adherence to national clinical and technical practice standards assures our patients they will receive the best and most consistent care possible.”

The accreditation applies to WPAHS Radiation Oncology sites at Allegheny General Hospital, Forbes Hospital, West Penn Hospital, Somerset Radiation Oncology, Allegheny Valley Hospital, Armstrong Center for Medicine and Health, Tony Teramana Cancer Center-Trinity Health System in Steubenville, Ohio, and Sharon Regional Cancer Center.

Radiation oncology (radiation therapy) is the careful use of high-energy radiation to treat cancer. A radiation oncologist may use radiation to cure cancer or to relieve a cancer patient’s pain.
West Penn Allegheny Health System and its network of both city and community-based radiation oncology practices merge sophisticated technology with compassionate patient care in a collaborative multi-disciplinary environment.

State-of-the-art therapies offered at network sites include three-dimensional conformal external beam radiotherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery/stereotactic radiotherapy and electron beam irradiation, including total skin electron beam therapy and operative placement of radiation with both low-dose rate and high-dose rate capabilities (brachytherapy).

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and
radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

ASTRO is the world’s largest radiation oncology organization comprised of nearly 10,000 medical professionals from around the globe who treat more than 1 million cancer patients each year.  ASTRO’s mission is to improve patient care through education, clinical practice, advancement of science and advocacy
