Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Dr. Richard L. Ray

Age: 66

Residence: Fox Chapel

Family: Married with two grown children

Education: Medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, 1969; Bachelor of Arts from Kenyon College, 1965

Profession: Orthopedic surgeon with West Penn Allegheny Health System, Allegheny General Hospital

Noteworthy: Traveled to Haiti in January as part of a team of physicians and residents to provide emergency medical care to victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake. He worked out of a hospital tent set up by the University of Miami and performed surgery and triage for dozens of victims.

Quote: "Basically, we were trying to put people back together. Most of our patients had been treated in the field but needed more expansive treatment. It was more like a MASH unit than a regular hospital. Beyond the humanitarian aspect, it was a real education for our residents."
