Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Pittsburgh Business Times: Manzi, Ahearn to leave UPMC for West Penn

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

Drs. Susan Manzi and Joseph Ahearn, co-founders and directors of the Lupus Center of Excellence at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, will join rival West Penn Allegheny Health System later this year, the hospital network announced on Wednesday.

Manzi has been named the system’s first chair of the department of medicine and Ahearn, her husband, will serve as the first chief scientific officer at the system’s Allegheny Singer Research Institute. Manzi is internationally regarded as a pioneer in research and care of people with lupus and related autoimmune disorders. In her new role, she will oversee all clinical academic and scientific endeavors within the integrated departments of medicine at Allegheny General Hospital, West Penn Hospital and West Penn’s Forbes Campus. These departments have more than 678 physicians and educate or train about 200 medical students, 120 residents and 68 fellows annually.

Ahearn came to Pittsburgh from the Johns Hopkins Hospital and School of Medicine in 1996 to serve as research director at the University of Pittsburgh Arthritis Institute. He is an internationally recognized expert in the causes and mechanisms of lupus and related diseases.

“Drs. Manzi and Ahearn are two exceptionally talented and accomplished physician scientists whose contributions to medicine in their respective fields have been enormous,” Dr. Sanford Kurtz, executive vice president, chief medical officer and president of the WPAHS Physician Organization, said in a prepared statement. “We are extremely thrilled that they have chosen to continue their stellar careers at the West Penn Allegheny Health System.”
