Newsmaker: Cynthia Petraglia

Age: 58

Residence: Ross

Family: Husband, Bob; daughter and son-in-law, Tina Petraglia and Doug Romaniszyn of Madison, Wis.

Occupation: Registered nurse and vascular nurse coordinator at West Penn Hospital

Background: Petraglia has worked in cardiovascular nursing for 37 years, all at West Penn. She is a 1969 graduate of Shaler High School and received her nursing degree from West Penn Hospital School of Nursing in 1972.

Noteworthy: She is a nominee for the American Heart Association's 2010 Mary Ann Scully Excellence in Nursing Award. The award is presented to a nurse who demonstrates a lifetime commitment to cardiac nursing. Petraglia was nominated for going the extra mile for patients, their families and her co-workers. She also was noted for developing patient education materials and teaching preoperative patient and family classes. She is among 11 nominees from 11 hospitals in the Pittsburgh region.

Quote: "I was quite surprised and honored. I've always wanted to be a nurse. I grew up the oldest of five kids, so I was always very motherly. I'm proud, as a nurse, to be here (at West Penn). The whole hospital is filled with many dedicated and friendly people."
