Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. AKMC Trust Partners with Borders for Bunny and Book Drive

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The Alle-Kiski Medical Center Trust announced today that it has formed a partnership with Borders Books and Music at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills to collect stuffed bunny rabbits and children’s books for young patients in the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Center at Alle-Kiski Medical Center (AKMC).

Customers at Borders are asked if they would like to purchase a stuffed bunny rabbit at a discounted price or a children’s book at the ticketed price for the drive. All items donated to the drive are new. To date, 45 stuffed bunny rabbits and more than 350 children’s books have been donated to the AKMC Trust.

“Coming to the Emergency Department can be a frightening experience for children who are sick or injured,” said Ginger Taylor, Chairwoman of the AKMC Trust Board of Trustees. “Having a stuffed animal to hold onto, or a book for their parents to read to them, will provide some comfort to a child in that kind of unfamiliar situation.”

Terri Iwinski, General Manager at Borders, created and spearheaded the project. “We enjoy having the opportunity to provide this service to benefit AKMC. The hospital is a strong presence at the mall and we are very excited to be able to partner with them in this way.”

William B. McCready, Executive Director of the AKMC Trust agrees. “I commend Terri and the staff at Borders for undertaking this unique project. I am truly touched by the store’s generosity, as well as the generosity of the customers who shop there.”

The bunny and book drive will run through Easter weekend. Anyone interested in donating an item should stop by Borders at Pittsburgh Mills to select and purchase a children’s book or stuffed bunny rabbit.
