Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Local Docs Take Part In Multi-State Organ Exchange

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Surgeons at Allegheny General Hospital recently took part in the nation's largest multi-state paired kidney exchange.

Twenty-four surgeries, 12 recipients, ages 21 to 70. Six states, nine transplant centers and more than two months. It all adds up to the largest multi-state organ exchange ever.

"Twelve people who would not have gotten a kidney transplant because of the paired exchange are now able to get kidneys," says Dr. Ngoc Thai, a transplant surgeon at Allegheny General Hospital, "So, I think it is going to be the wave of the future, and it's a way to increase the number of transplants that are done every year."

People are willing to donate to a loved one, but may not be a suitable match. An organized exchange network plays matchmaker and the results can be lifesaving.

On February 3, 2010, three of the surgeries took place at AGH.
