McCandless/Franklin Park, Mon Valley EMS Squads Again Take Top Honors in WPAHS STAR Cup Competition

Emergency medical services providers from Pittsburgh’s northern suburbs and the Mon Valley were repeat winners in the second annual STAR Cup competition, sponsored by the Simulation, Training and Academic Research Center (STAR) at West Penn Allegheny Health System.

The teams enacted a medical management scenario covering initial care and management of patients in the field setting. The competition took place during EMS Update 2010, March 24-27 at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. The winning teams received trophies, IPods and gift cards.

The winners are:
1st Place – Advanced Life Support (ALS) Division, McCandless/Franklin Park Ambulance Authority. Team Members - Patty Mills, EMT-P; Tim Mills, EMT-P; Ed Gnoth, EMT-P; Matt Nickl, EMT-P. Communities Served: Town of McCandless, Franklin Park Borough, Pine Township, Bradford Woods Borough, Marshall Township.

2nd Place - ALS Division, Mon Valley EMS. Team Members – Sean Cummings, EMT-D; Nicole Johnson, EMT-D; Nate Massafra, EMT; Paul Buchko, EMT. Communities Served: Monessen, Donora, Charleroi, North Charleroi, Fallowfield Township, Speers, Dunlevy, Twilight, Allenport, North Belle Vernon, Belle Vernon Borough, Stockdale.

1st Place Basic Life Support (BLS) Division, Mon Valley EMS. Team Members - Dietrich Margacelli, EMT; Ryan Hess, EMT; Chris Hepple, EMT; Tina Rosul, EMT.

2nd Place BLS Division - EMS Angels. Bob Cook, EMT; Ken Stadtfeld, EMT. Cook is associated with Pitcairn EMS and Stadtfeld with Medical Rescue Team South.

The Simulation, Teaching and Academic Research Center (STAR) at West Penn Allegheny Health System is a virtual hospital. From the ambulance, to the ICU, to the delivery room, STAR allows aspiring and practicing healthcare professionals to perfect their skills in virtual reality, gaining confidence and proficiency prior to true patient encounters.
