AVH and Borders Books and Bunnies Drive to End April 30

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Natrona Heights, Pa. – The end of the second annual spring “Books and Bunnies”
drive, a collaborative fundraising effort between Allegheny Valley Hospital and Borders at Pittsburgh Mills, is rapidly approaching and a special event is planned for the upcoming Easter weekend to celebrate.
On Saturday, April 23 from 12-2 p.m., East Deer EMS and A-K Pulser, Inc., paramedics are scheduled to be stationed at the outside entrance to Borders. They will provide ambulance tours and take blood pressure readings upon request. Children who stop by the event will receive a coloring book.
Terri Iwinski, General Manager at Borders, created and spearheaded the project. “This year’s event really exceeded our expectations,” she said. “So far, our customers have donated 880 books and 140 stuffed bunnies with a value of more than $5,600.”
This year’s Books and Bunnies drive runs from March 1 though April 30. Customers at Borders will have the opportunity to purchase a new plush bunny rabbit or a children’s book to be donated to the Emergency Department at Allegheny Valley Hospital. The items are distributed to children who come to the Emergency Department to help ease their fears and distract them while they are treated.
“We have received a ton of positive feedback about this program from the Emergency Department staff as well as the parents of our pediatric patients,” said Ginger Taylor, Chairwoman of the AKMC Trust Board of Trustees. “Anything we can do to ease the anxieties of our youngest patients is a good thing.”
“I would like to commend Terri and the entire Borders staff for helping us to create and sustain the Books and Bunnies program,” said William B. McCready, Executive Director of the AKMC Trust, the hospital’s fundraising office. “They truly go above and beyond in their service to the community.”
