Srinivas Murali, MD, FACC, Named Governor of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the American College of Cardiology

Srinivas Murali, MD, FACC, Director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) has joined the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) as the Governor of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter.

The Board of Governors is an elite leadership group of cardiovascular professionals who represent the voice of patients, practices, hospitals and doctors in each of the 50 states and Puerto Rico.

Dr. Murali’s term will run until 2017. He will concurrently serve as the Vice President of the ACC’s Pennsylvania Chapter till 2015, when he will assume the role of President for the remainder of his term.

The ACC is a 43,000 member nonprofit medical society comprised of physicians, surgeons, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and practice managers and bestows credentials among cardiovascular specialists who meet its stringent qualifications. The College is a leader in the formulation of health policy, standards and guidelines, and is a staunch supporter of cardiovascular research. The ACC provides professional education and operates national registries for the measurement and improvement of quality care.

In his position, Dr. Murali will serve as the liaison to the ACC for health policy and grassroots related initiatives, as well as implementation of quality improvement activities. He also will work with the Pennsylvania Chapter to influence state and federal legislative and regulatory efforts affecting the practice of cardiology and patient access to quality, cost-effective care.

“It is a great honor to be selected by my peers to advance the practice of cardiovascular medicine in Pennsylvania and throughout the United States,” Dr. Murali said. “I look forward to working with my colleagues in the American College of Cardiology to continually improve care for our patients.”

In addition to leading WPAHS’ Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Dr. Murali also serves as Medical Director of the system’s Cardiovascular Institute. He is a Professor of Medicine at both Temple University School of Medicine and Drexel University College of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.

Dr. Murali completed medical school at the University of Madras in India followed by residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and cardiovascular disease at Jewish Hospital and Medical Center in Brooklyn and fellowship training in heart failure and cardiac transplantation at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. He joined the faculty in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and served there for 19 years before moving to the West Penn Allegheny Health System in 2006.
