KDKA-TV: Spring Tough On Asthma Sufferers

If your asthma symptoms are flaring, you aren't alone.

Between medication and some common sense things, you can get your symptoms under control.

Finding it hard to breathe?

People with asthma, or inflammation in the airways triggered by things in the environment, have been having a hard time these days.

"We're basically having an upswing in the number of patients calling in," says Dr. Deborah Gentile, and asthma specialist at Allegheny General Hospital. "Many of them have allergy-induced asthma and because the pollens are out there right now, their allergies are flaring as well as their asthma."

Mother Nature didn't help.

"The problem this year was it peaked so early. It peaked right when we usually have people start their meds," explains Dr. Gentile. "And the nasal sprays usually take two weeks to work, so we we're behind."
