WPAHS Oncology Chair Named to American Society for Radiation Oncology Post

Friday, April 6th, 2012

PITTSBURGH - David S. Parda, M.D., West Penn Allegheny Health System’s Chair of the Oncology Service Line and of the Radiation Oncology Network, has been appointed to the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Best Practices Committee.

ASTRO is the world’s largest radiation oncology organization comprised of nearly 10,000 medical professionals from around the globe who treat more than 1 million cancer patients each year. ASTRO’s mission is to improve patient care through education, clinical practice, advancement of science and advocacy.

Best Practices are designed to showcase the best practices available for optimal patient care based on available literature and expert opinion and will complement ASTRO’s clinical practice guidelines and safety white papers. Using the RAND appropriateness methodology, expert panels will be involved in creating Best Practices that will define the appropriate use of radiation oncology technology, treatment methods and patient care processes. The first Best Practices project is expected to launch in 2012.

Dr. Parda joins a select group of physicians and physicists from some of the nation’s top cancer centers including the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO; Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Institute of Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA; MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX and the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA.

Dr. Parda has served as Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology of Allegheny General Hospital and the WPAHS Radiation Oncology Network, which includes 11 radiation oncology sites throughout western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio, since 2000. He has chaired the WPAHS Oncology Service Line since 2010 where all oncology services are being integrated throughout the health system and Pittsburgh region. He is also Chair of the Central Institutional Review Board (CIRB) of the National Cancer Institute (NIH), Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD) and Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP). CTEP is responsible for coordinating the world’s largest publicly funded oncology clinical trials organization with more than 900 active trials enrolling 30,000 participants annually, nearly 400 grants and cooperative agreements, and approximately 100 investigational new drugs. He is a Professor of Radiation Oncology at Temple University School of Medicine.
