Valley News Dispatch: Destination Wellness holds health expo

Alle-Kiski Medical Center's Destination Wellness is sponsoring a mall-wide expo with more than 60 health-related vendors featuring displays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills, Frazer. 

Health care services represented include: heart disease, sleep disorders, senior care, lung disease, cancer care, women's issues, the functions of the emergency department and childhood obesity. Many local physicians and health care professionals will be on hand to answer questions.

New this year to the health fair is "Mommapalooza," designed to provide women of all ages with vital resources to help make important health care decisions for themselves and their families.

There will be a special section on childhood obesity and information on choosing healthy snacks for children. Hannah Schofield from Allegheny General Hospital will describe the benefits of Kidshape, a Highmark program that promotes healthy lifestyle changes in the areas of diet and exercise for children and their families.

Screenings include blood pressure, blood glucose, bone density, body-fat analysis, balance, facial sun damage and carbon monoxide breath testing courtesy of Tobacco Free Allegheny and an AKMC Blood Drive.

Children's activities include Caricatures by Bob, Stuffee from the Children's Museum, a Teddy Bear Clinic hosted by Girl Scout Troop 20474, child fingerprint identification and tours of Life Flight and local ambulance services.

The Allegheny County Health Department will offer free lectures on prostate, colorectal and ovarian cancer at Destination Wellness and a free skin cancer screening through Derma Scan will be available.

AKMC will partner with the National Kidney Foundation for a free Kidney Screening as a part of the Kidney Early Evaluation Program. If you are 18 years of age or older, have a sibling with diabetes, high blood pressure or chronic kidney failure, or if you have diabetes or high blood pressure, contact the National Kidney Foundation at 1-800-261-4115 to register. Space is limited.

Exercise and health demonstrations include tai chi, ballroom dancing, western square dancing, Zumba, Silver Sneakers, karate, ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop.
