AGH GI Lab Earns Quality Award

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The Gastrointestinal Lab at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) has earned the Quality in GI Lab Award from the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy programs that follow the Society’s recommendations on privileging, quality assurance, endoscopy reprocessing and infection control and those that have completed specialized training on principles in quality and safety in endoscopy.

“This award reflects the quality of our program and our commitment to excellence in patient care,” said Abhijit Kulkarni, MD, director, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at AGH. “We are honored to be recognized by ASGE for our efforts to enhance quality and safety in our endoscopy unit.”

Endoscopy is a medical procedure that involves passing of a flexible lighted viewing instrument (an endoscope) into the esophagus or rectum for the purpose of examining portions of the gastrointestinal tract. The technique is used to diagnose and treat common digestive problems, such as swallowing disorders, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease, peptic ulcers and functional bowel diseases.

The ASGE was founded in 1941 as a professional organization dedicated to advancing patient care and digestive health by promoting excellence in gastrointestinal endoscopy. AGH is the only academic GI Lab in Western Pennsylvania – and one of only 73 programs nation-wide – to have earned the ASGE’s quality recognition.

“ASGE received an outstanding response to this program, and we are delighted to be recognizing recipients from 73 endoscopy units who are working hard every day to provide high-quality care to their patients in a safe environment,” said Douglas O. Faigel, MD, FASGE, chairman, ASGE Quality Assurance Task Force. “We are proud to acknowledge AGH through our Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program for its commitment to promoting the highest standards of safety and quality.”
