KDKA-TV: Bellevue Hospital's ER To Close In 90 Days

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Changes are coming to Suburban General Hospital in Bellevue that will impact how residents get inpatient care, and possibly, the make up of the community.

The West Penn Allegheny Health System has announced Suburban General Hospital, 90 days from now, will no longer be an inpatient hospital with an emergency room.

"I really wish they wouldn't close the ER," says Barbara Johnson of Bellevue. She's had medical care there for a back condition.

"Without an emergency room, it's not a hospital," says Linda Woshner, the Bellevue Council vice president. "People like having the availability of a hospital in their community. So they know if they really need care immediately it's only a couple of minutes away and they felt very secure with that. Now, they don't. They feel it's going to take longer to get to that emergency room."

The change comes as a reflection of the hospital's current consumer patterns. Only a third of the hospital's inpatient beds are filled on average. Many of the patients using the hospital come for outpatient care.
