Pittsburgh Business Times: Allegheny General to end inpatient, ER services at Suburban Campus

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

by Kris B. Mamula

West Penn Allegheny Health System on Thursday announced that it had reached a tentative agreement with Plano, Texas-based LifeCare Hospitals to expand to 50 long-term acute care beds from 41 beds the provider currently leases. In addition, LifeCare is considering adding 50 skilled nursing or transitional care beds at the campus by year’s end.

A new urgent care center will replace the hospital’s emergency department, according to the announcement. Eighty-six percent of patients seen in the hospital’s emergency department could be treated at an urgent care center while patients with true emergencies could be see at Allegheny General several miles away.

Inpatient admissions account for just 4 percent of hospital volume at the Suburban Campus, according to West Penn Allegheny. Current surgical patients will be treated at Allegheny General.

Outpatient services will continue to be offered at the facility, including radiology, lab, dialysis and diagnostic imaging and the addition of other new outpatient services is under consideration.

Spokeswoman Kelly Sorice said it was too early to say how many people will lose their jobs as a result of the changes. A total of 275 people work at the Suburban Campus and the long-term acute care expansion and potential increase in the number of skilled beds means many West Penn Allegheny employees will be picked up by LifeCare.

In a prepared statement also released on Thursday, LifeCare Hospitals of Pittsburgh CEO Rick Pletz said he would like to hire “many of the highly trained staff” from the facility.

LifeCare provides long-term care and rehabilitation services for people with complex medical problems. The company has 19 locations in nine states, including a 155-bed facility on Penn Avenue in Wilkinsburg.
