Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Hospital explains closing to 110 in Bellevue

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

West Penn Allegheny officials met with about 110 people in Bellevue Friday night to discuss the hospital system's decision to close its emergency room and inpatient services at Suburban General Hospital.

The meeting was held to allay residents' concerns about the changes. The hospital plans to lease all of its beds to LifeCare, which provides long-term acute care.

Because the hospital will not have any beds for its patients, it is legally unable to have an emergency room, explained Dawn Gideon, chief of hospital operations for West Penn Allegheny. She gave a presentation on the hospital's reasons for the change, noting that many emergency services would be available through the hospital's Urgent Care service, which will operate 12 hours a day.
