KDKA-TV: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Used to Combat Insomnia

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

From time to time, people can be kept awake with intruding, anxious thoughts.

"Worries about I guess my family, my life in general, where it's going," says one man about what keeps him up at night.

"Stresses and work," can interfere with falling asleep, says one woman.

Insomnia, or trouble sleeping, can affect how well you function during the day. When this gets to be a consistent problem, for more than six months, a treatment called cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, can help.

"If you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep at night time, you don't necessarily need medication," says Dr. Mario Kinsella, a sleep specialist at West Penn Hospital.

Quick fixes, like pills, are not an ideal long term solution. A study in the "Journal of the American Medical Association" points to a strategy that is safe and healthy for the long run.

With CBT, people are taught to avoid unrealistic sleep expectations, restrict their time in bed and get up at the same time each day.
