Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: West Penn nursing school debuts $6M renovation

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

By Carl Prine

When Virginia McMorran Jones, Margaret Tranter and Marjorie Nelson Snyder graduated from Western Pennsylvania Hospital's School of Nursing in 1948, male visitors weren't allowed above the first floor of their Friendship Avenue classroom and dormitory, and rules firmly mandated cadets wear starched white caps to match pristine white shoes and dresses.

The 81-year-olds returned to the 85-year-old Bloomfield building on Saturday afternoon to celebrate a $6 million renovation that puts talking robot mannequins in the beds of a high-tech simulation hospital ward and includes a remodeled microbiology laboratory and dorm rooms that put hotels to shame.

"We had nothing like this when we went to school," said Jones, a retired nurse who remains active as a West Penn volunteer. "What they offer today is so sophisticated. But some things haven't changed. You can see that they still teach, 'The patient comes first.'"

Renovations include a new elevator, roof, windows, reception area and lounges. Workers are finishing the computer labs and wiring the entire structure for Internet access. Unlike Jones' class, the 63 graduates of the Class of 2009 are nearly a third men, and the school increasingly draws older students pursuing a second career through a 22-month full-time program taught by Clarion University faculty.
