June Classes Offered at Destination Wellness

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The following classes are available to the public at Destination Wellness located at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills:

June 2010

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning. This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues. Sessions are by appointment only. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call 724-274-5202 today for appointment/details.

Highmark® Clear the Air: Smoking Cessation
Your health is worth one more try. This one-session, two-hour program is the step you take BEFORE deciding to quit tobacco. This program helps you to identify your reasons for quitting and gives you the tools you need to quit for good. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Donate blood and save a life. With every four blood donations, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local business.

Sunday, June 6
Family & Friends CPR
2-4:30 p.m.
Family & Friends CPR was developed by the American Heart Association to teach the basics of CPR to people with limited or no medical training. Family & Friends CPR does not provide a certification card; however, it does provide you with all the steps necessary to save a loved one should the need ever arise. Fee: $10 (student manual included)

Monday & Tuesday: June 7 & 8
AARP Driver’s Safety two-day course
10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. both days
Tune up your driving skills and learn how to adjust to age-related driving changes. Participants will learn how to obtain insurance discounts for attending this course.
Fee: $14.00 per person for non-members; $12.00 per person for AARP members.

Prostate Enlargement lecture
6 p.m.
Doctors call enlargement of the prostate Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH. By the age of 80, eighty percent of men have BPH. Traditionally the problem was treated with medication or an invasive surgical procedure. Join Rong Lin, MD for a free lecture focusing on an advanced treatment option for BPH called GreenLight™ Laser Therapy. Dr. Lin will also discuss the causes and symptoms of prostate enlargement. Heartsaver AED/CPR
9 a.m. - 1 p.m.
This course includes adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Relief of choking in the adult, child and infant victim also included. A course completion card valid for two years will be given after skills and written testing. Fee: $35 (student manual included). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited.

BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR
2-7 p.m.
If you are a healthcare provider this is the class for you! It includes adult, child and infant CPR. Two-rescuer scenarios with bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). Certification card - valid for two years, will be provided to participants after completion of skills and written testing. Fee: $50 (required student manual included). Monday, June 14
BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
5 -8 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class in the last two years, you can take the renewal course. You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers the information in the healthcare provider class in an abbreviated format. Upon course completion, participants receive a card valid for two years. Fee: $30/student (includes required student manual). Call to register at

Tuesdays: June 15 & 22
Joslin Diabetes Center’s Self Management Education two-day evening series
5 - 8 p.m. both days
This comprehensive program is designed for individuals with diabetes who are interested in learning how to manage their diabetes, prevent complications, eat healthfully and control blood sugar levels. There are two classes in this series that occur once for two consecutive weeks. *Participants must attend both classes. Wednesday, June 16
Birthing with an Epidural
6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
This 2 ½ hour session provides women and their partners with updated, accurate information about what to expect when an epidural is given. Attendees will learn what to expect during the labor and birth process and discover answers to many important questions, including how to tell true from false labor, when to come to the hospital, what an epidural is and what happens if it does not work. Attendees will also learn about the use of intravenous (IV) medications and fluids, monitors, induction, forceps, vacuum and cesarean section, how the baby will look and routine nursery procedures. Safe Sitter® babysitting course
1 - 5:30 p.m. both days
This two-day class provides children ages 11-13 with essential skills in safe sitting and handling emergencies. Fee: $50/student. Call to register at 724-274-5202.

Look Good … Feel Better®
10:30 a.m. – 12:30p.m.
A free workshop facilitated by trained cosmetologists who teach women with cancer how to understand and care for changes in skin and hair that may occur during treatment. Caring for Your Kidneys lecture
6 p.m.
Your kidneys play an important role in keeping you healthy. Located in the middle of your back, just below your rib cage, your kidneys filter blood and remove waste products and extra water, producing urine. If your kidneys do not remove these wastes, they can build up in your blood and cause grave damage to your body. Join nephrologist Uma Kannapadi, MD from Renal Endocrine Associates in Natrona Heights, Pa., for a free lecture focusing on how to care for your kidneys.
