June Classes Offered at Destination Wellness

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The following classes are available to the public at Destination Wellness located at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills:

June 2011

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning. This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues. Sessions are by appointment only. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call 724-274-5202 today for appointment/details.

Highmark® Clear the Air: Smoking Cessation
Your health is worth one more try. This one-session, two-hour program is the step you take BEFORE deciding to quit tobacco. This program helps you to identify your reasons for quitting and gives you the tools you need to quit for good. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call for your one-on-one session with a trained smoking cessation instructor at 724-274-5202.

Tai Chi for beginners series begins
7 p.m.
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese martial art that promotes well being by circulating the “chi” of the body through a series of slow, relaxing and controlled movements. It’s great for reducing stress and anxiety, improving balance, increasing flexibility and much more. Recommended as a helpful program for people with arthritis or those recovering from an accident or fall. Class runs for eight weeks through July 21, 2011. Blood Drive
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Donate blood and save a life. With every four blood donations, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local business.

Monday, June 6
Heartsaver AED/CPR
5 - 9 p.m.
This course includes adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Relief of choking in the adult, child and infant victim also included. A course completion card valid for two years will be given after skills and written testing. Fee: $35 (student manual included). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited.

Tuesdays, June 7 through August 9
Highmark® Drop 10 In 10 SM
10 a.m.
Drop 10 in 10 is an innovative weight management program designed to help participants lose 10 pounds (or 10 percent) of their body weight through an engaging program of optimal nutrition, regular exercise and behavior change. The program includes a combination of educational lectures, experiential activities, self-study, self motivating and personal goal setting. Drop 10 in 10 is designed to help individuals move away from the “all or nothing” mentality of fad dieting to the philosophy of making meaningful and long-lasting nutrition, exercise and lifestyle changes. Birth Basics
6:30 – 9 p.m.
This 2 ½ hour session provides women and their partners with updated, accurate information about what to expect when an epidural is given. Attendees will learn what to expect during the labor and birth process and discover answers to many important questions, including how to tell true from false labor, when to come to the hospital, what an epidural is and what happens if it does not work. This class should be taken in the second trimester of pregnancy. Class fee is $30 per couple. To register call 412-578-7271. Class size is limited.

AARP Driver’s Safety two-day course
10 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. both days
Tune up your driving skills and learn how to adjust to age-related driving changes. Participants will learn how to obtain insurance discounts for attending this course. *You must attend both days classes. Fee: $12 per person for AARP members; $14 for non-members.

4 – 8 p.m.

Safe Sitter® babysitting course
1 – 5:30 p.m. both days
This two-day class provides children ages 11-13 with essential skills in safe sitting and handling emergencies. Fee: $50/student. Registration required by calling 724-274-5202.

Saturday, June 25
BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class in the last two years, you can take the renewal course. You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers the information in the healthcare provider class in an abbreviated format. Upon course completion, participants receive a card valid for two years. Fee: $30/student (includes required student manual). Call to register at

The first aid course includes basic first aid, adult, child, and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Two-rescuer scenarios with bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). Certification card - valid for two years, will be provided to participants after completion of skills and written testing. Fee: $50 (required student manual included). Diabetes & Kidney Disease
6 p.m.
Your kidneys play an important role in keeping you healthy. If your kidneys do not work properly, waste products can build up in your blood and cause grave damage to your body. Join Uma Kannapadi, MD from Renal Endocrine Associates in Natrona Heights, Pa., as she provides an overview of the relationship between diabetes and kidney disease.
