Gary J. Strong named President and CEO of Western Pennsylvania Hospital - Forbes Regional Campus

Allegheny Health Network officials announced today that Gary J. Strong has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of West Penn Hospital – Forbes Campus.

Mr. Strong comes to Forbes after serving in numerous executive roles at large health systems in Minneapolis. According to Dawn M. Gideon, Executive Vice President and Chief of Hospital Operations for WPAHS, Mr. Strong brings to Forbes an impressive record of achievements in clinical excellence, integration of services and employee engagement.

“Gary Strong is an exceptionally talented executive whose wide-ranging experience in the healthcare industry will serve Forbes well as we continue to invest in the hospital’s growth and its integration with Allegheny Health Network’s tertiary hospitals,” Ms. Gideon said.

Forbes is a 335-bed hospital in Monroeville, providing quality health care for residents of eastern Allegheny and Westmoreland counties with a complete array of surgical and medical services.

The hospital recently completed a $24 million growth and expansion project that included the addition of a new Women’s and Infants Care Center and the Ed Dardanell Heart and Vascular Center. Forbes also expanded the Gerald McGinnis Emergency Department and this past year added a new Joint and Spine Center.

Mr. Strong most recently served as Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer with the Allina Health System in Minneapolis, a $2.7 billion, 24,000 employee health system. During his tenure, Allina implemented a series of system-wide performance improvement initiatives.

Prior to joining Allina, Mr. Strong served at Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, holding positions of increased responsibility over an eight-year period. As Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Fairview, he managed all operating entities of a $2.3 billion,18,000-employee health system. The system included the University of Minnesota Hospital and Children’s Hospital; six community hospitals and a 300-employee physician group.

Mr. Strong began his career as Director of St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Topeka, Kansas, and subsequently held the positions of Vice President of Operations and Chief Information Officer at Millard Fillmore Health System in Buffalo, NY, and Vice President of Operations and CIO at Via Christi Health System in Wichita, Kansas.

He is a graduate of Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, and received his master’s degree in business administration at St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY.
